[livejournal.com profile] lovestories shared this with me and it is my new favorite thing in the world

that is all. i can't stand this character at ALL.

public post is public because feminism + pop culture = i love it.
anythingbutgrey: (felicity; what kind of fuckery is this?)
ahoy! i have more on this post, wherein Stephen Moyer of HBO's True Blood seemed to think rape was a ~classical way of men being Manly and Poetic and Shit~

Those of us who watch HBO's True Blood would have a hard time denying the show's sex appeal (or at least, sex). After all, Bon Temps, Lousiana (the fictional setting for the show) is one seeexxxy town. Vampires banging humans? Check. Humans banging shape-shifting farm animals? Check. A racy sex website hosted by a main character? Check. A crazed ancient goddess who makes everyone around her bang each other? Check. But female rape fantasies realized by gentlemanly Civil War-era vampires? Um, no, actually.

... MOAR

LET'S DISCUSS HOW MAD THIS MAKES ME. and you. AND THE PLANET. i hope ONTD is talking about this.

because i didn't already dislike stephen moyer:

"The thing about vampirism is that it taps into a female point of view – you have an old-fashioned gentleman with manners who is a fucking killer… it's an interesting duality, because in our present society it would be an odd thing for a woman to say, ‘I want my man to be physical with me.' How, as a modern man, can you fucking work that? It's one thing to be polite and gentle… But when do you know it's OK to crawl out of the mud and rape her [as Bill does in one scene]?… It's difficult stuff for a bloke, but a vampire gets away with it…. I think that's the attraction of the show – it's looking back at a romantic time when men were men, but they were still charming." — True Blood's Stephen Moyer

.... yeah.

idek.

also, for the record, it's not that difficult or odd for a woman to say that she likes it rough. i'm pretty sure you can use your words to express such sentiments and it's a-okay.

I'll be cross-posting this at Calling On You even though I haven't posted there in like three months.

This was just in my GMail links as Reuter's "Oddly Enough" article.

Apparently, women want women-only train cars in the notoriously cramped Tokyo train systems because the men that surround them can't keep their hands to themselves. Hello rape culture, how are you today. Now, I find it vaguely offensive this was under an "oddly enough" category simply because this is actually really important, even if they put it under oddly enough because the men responded with the desire for a men-only car in turn in a rather absurd reactionary display. But as someone who has been groped on a crowded subway train, I can tell you this is actually really important. It's not the worst thing that can happen by far, but it is yet another example of how our bodies are not our own and even the smallest thing like going to work can lead to a violation of personal rights.

But what's really offensive is this:

False accusations of groping were highlighted when Japan's Supreme Court overturned in April the conviction of a professor for groping a girl on a Tokyo train.

Judges pointed out a need to be careful in such cases when the accuser was the only source of evidence, media said.

Apparently my word about my body is not enough. I can't say anything about that particular case because I don't know anything about it and it is very possible she later recanted her story, but "a need to be careful in such cases when the accuser was the only source of evidence" sets an incredibly dangerous precedent for the women who come forward and is yet another offshoot of the notion that women can't be trusted with the own stories they tell about their victimization.

But the thing about crowded subway trains? There's no DNA evidence there, and you can never see everyone's hands. But groping still constitutes assault.
