The first time I was far too distracted by Daine/Numair to look for other pairings, but I've been rereading lately and suddenly I loved both of them <<.

My brain is obviously a fickle thing!

First off, I have NO idea if this is what you wanted, but I had to try it the most I looked at this prompt. Secondly, I haven't read the books in at least three years so any canon mistakes are entirely my own. ♥

Consider this loosely set sometime between the end of Emperor Mage and The Realms of the Gods.

She's lying on her bed, the light of dawn just starting to come in through her bedroom window. Kitten is curled up in the groove of her hip, the young dragon snoring softly and occasionally twitching in her sleep.

There's a tap on the half-open window, then another. She feels the now familiar buzz that tells her her visitor is Immortal.

She slips out of bed, smiling as Kitten grumbles sleepily in protest at being disturbed and goes to the window. There is Rikash, beating his metallic wings to hover in place just outside it, a wicked grin of invitation on his face and the strap of a bag clutched in the talons of one foot.

They've been here before. They even have a system. Of sorts.

She nods once, reaching for a quill and parchment. She dips the quill in the pot of ink, then scrawls a message and leaves it on the desk for Numair or Onua, whoever comes looking for her first to find.

"Turn your back," she says, and Rikash obeys, snorting.

"You mortals and your insistence on clothing. Vastly overrated if you ask me. Hurry now, Daine or I'll leave without you," he calls and they both know he's not serious. He'll wait.

It's quick work to shed her clothing and to call on her wild magic. It burns through her veins, amber dark and powerful. The room seems to grow, but really she knows that she's the one getting smaller. Soon she's adjusting to seeing the world through the eyes of a hawk, balance gone ungainly with her talons scratching on the stone floor. She shifts her weight, and then, with a flap of her wings, launches herself to the window ledge.

Kitten chirps at her, curling back in on herself and going back to sleep. Daine looks at Rikash's smile and takes flight.

***

She doesn't ask where they're going. Knowing Rikash, he's got a specific destination in mind and she'll find out when they get there. He keeps the pace steady, but it is gratifying to see him constantly checking his speed to make sure he hasn't lost her – isn't pushing her too far.

When they've been flying long enough that she's starting to tire, he motions that he wants to land and she turns herself in a circle and makes the dive down. He's brought them to a small beach, enclosed by a natural bowl shaped cliff face and covered in white sand. Rikash lands on a large piece of driftwood, the easiest thing for his clawed feet to find purchase on.

Daine lands beside him, though somewhat more clumsily. The hawk form is still relatively new to her and she's not quite got the hang of graceful landings. She gives him the closest thing she can manage to an indignant look in this body and laughing; he releases his hold on the bag tosses it onto the sand. "Alright, go on then."

She waits till he averts his eyes, then changes back into her human self, pulling the change of clothing he's brought from the bag and putting it on.

"Decent yet?" he drawls, shifting his balance from one foot to another.

"You can turn around now," she says, walking over to join him near his perch.

He turns to face her, stretching his wings once before settling them against his back.

"I didn’t know this beach was here."

"I found it a few days ago." He says flippantly.

She smiles. "It's beautiful, but are we here for any particular reason?"

He shrugs in as much as he can with his silver wings. The motion catches the rays from the sun, light reflecting on each metallic feather. "Do we need a reason?"

She puts her hands on her hips.

"Alright, alright, I thought you might want to meet the group of sea lions that live here."

She's grinning then, already calling out with her powers to them as they start to emerge from the water, greeting her excitedly. Rikash starts to laugh at her, when she shrieks indignantly at him for not turning around when she shucks off her clothing for the second time in a handful of hours and starts to make the change to join the sea lions in the water. A feeling like joy bubbles up inside her.

***

Later, after she has swam with sea lions and dressed again, she lays on her back on a sun-warmed, flat rock just on the edge of the water. She watches the light play on his feathers.

"What?" he asks, hoping down from his perch and lands awkwardly on the rock beside her. "You were thinking pretty hard about something."

She sits up, shifting to give him more room. "I was thinking of Ozorne's transformation." She refuses to think about what else happened in Carthak. It’s still too soon. "I still sometimes wonder what it would be like to... become a Stormwing."

He shakes his head, a wry smile on his lips. "I wouldn't let you try anyway. I respect you too much to trap you into this existence. Immortality is a long time when you..."

When it becomes clear he's not going to continue, she prompts, "When you what, Rikash?"

"When you have no one to share it with." He coughs, looking away from her. "Besides, who'd want to become one of the most hated creatures ever created?"

"Rikash," she leans forward to touch his face.

Her motion must have startled him, because suddenly his feet can't seem to find purchase on the rock, and he slips, falling forward awkwardly. She closes her eyes out of instinct, throws her arms protectively in front of her face as sharp bits of metal that make up his feathers come toward her. Nothing happens.

When she opens her eyes cautiously, she can see he's caught himself enough that she's out of reach from anything not made of flesh. His face is so close their noses are almost touching, the bones braided into his hair rattling together as the strands of his braids tickle her cheek. Her heart starts beating faster and she makes a decision.

She wonders if he can see it in her face, because there's a look of uncertainty in those green eyes as they look back into hers – something vulnerable and out of place in an Immortal creature that has lived as long as he has and who has seen so much. She leans forward a fraction of an inch and brushes her lips against his. They're soft, warm and feel so human. She hears his breath catch in his throat, fully expecting him to pull away, and then his lips are on hers.

She slides a hand into his hair, pulls him closer. Her other hand traces lazy shapes on his bare chest. He makes a low sound, not quite a growl and slides his tongue into her mouth.

When they finally pull apart, they're both breathing heavily and, if she's not mistaken, he's blushing.

"We uh, appear to have an audience," she says weakly.

The sea lions are watching them. Intently.

Rikash backs up, wings flapping until he's hovering above the rock. "I ought to get you back before your... esteemed teacher decides to send out a search party," he says.

She knows she should call him on this – but she can tell he's not ready to talk about what they've just done. Not yet. So she lets it be.

"Alright," she says, regretfully declining the sea lions' invitation for a second swim. "Do you think we could come back here sometime?"

The question seems to surprise him. "Ah, yes. If you like."

She smiles at him. "I would like that."

This time he turns his back without prompting as she sheds her clothing and stuffs it back into the bag. She leaves it in easy reach of him, and then makes her change. When her eyes adjust again, she can see he has already collected the bag and is starting to rise higher into the air.

"By the way, Daine..." he says, his usual teasing tone back in his voice. "You know, your body isn't that bad. For a mortal."

She takes off after him, beating her wings, shrieking at him with a sound that sounds remarkably like laughter.

Hope you liked it. ;)

Oooh, this was wonderful - seriously, I wasn't even expecting a fill but this is perfect, and it goes far beyond what I was expecting :D.

It's just... It's exactly what I love about them in canon, the sarcasm and the flirting and Rikash being quite sweet underneath and the animals being the cause of it all.

The sea lions are watching them. Intently.

/SNort.

Basically, this was wonderful ^^ - and thank you so much for writing it!
