War Stories: A Comment Ficathon
Welcome to the war stories ficathon. Some quick guidelines:
What can I prompt and how do I do so?
Basically whatever you want, as long as there's a core component of a war story therein. Can be pre-, post-, or intra-war as long as it is, at its core, about the war. I'm pretty general with my concept of fictional conflicts, so if you've got a battle or a zombie apocalypse or a revolution, you're good to go. That means you can take a fandom that has a canonical war (like, say, Harry Potter) or you can take a fandom that doesn't have a war (like, say, New Girl) and plop them into a Hunger Games war AU or a zombie apocalypse. Have fun with it. I'm grim about my war stories but you don't have to be.
Prompts should contain the following format:
Fandom (not optional, can be multi-fandom or crossover) - Characters/Ship (optional) - Timeline (optional) - Prompt (which may be a plot, song lyric, quote, etc., but is not optional)
In other words, you can leave a character and/or a ship, and/or a timeline, which are optional, and a prompt, which is not. If you want, you can just leave a set of song lyrics and see what people do with them. If you want, you can just leave a timeline with those lyrics, or a just a character, or all three.
How do I respond?
There are no restrictions in terms of word count, format, tense, point of view, etc. Please title all of your response fics as such in bold at the top of your comment (make sure to close the bold tag!) since LJ took out comment titles because they're dumb:
Title - Character/Ship - Timeline
Presumably, your fics will contain these three things even if they weren't in the prompt. You can also fill prompts that have already been filled. If something speaks to you, as it were, it doesn't matter if there's already fic for it. You can write your own.
How do I promote?
Here's a tumblr post (gen image if you have no idea who Mako Mori is in which case go see Pacific Rim ASAP and thank me later)

Date: 2013-07-22 07:55 pm (UTC)When it’s all over, Raleigh sleeps for three straight days. The consciousness he had earned on the life raft had been hard-won, and as soon as they had been lifted onto the helicopters he had passed out, Mako’s hand in his.
When he wakes, she is curled up asleep on the next bed over, though clearly not a patient – she is fully dressed and on top of the sheets. Her breath rustles the blue streak of hair that has fallen across her face and he has to swallow past sudden thickness in his throat. She is there and that is everything.
Over the course of the coming year, they stand side by side at ceremonies commemorating their actions and those fallen. At her father’s funeral, Mako doesn’t say a word but clutches his hand in a death grip with watery eyes and an iron set to her jaw.
The interviews seemingly last forever, and she is much better at it than him. While he slouches sullenly in his chair, she sits up straight and gives calm, articulate answers. It isn’t enough. The press want emotion, they want romance, they want tragedy. Raleigh and Mako are not what they want.
They don’t feel like rock stars. They feel worn.
In hotel rooms around the world, they wind themselves together in sleep, breathing in the same air and stale fear. When he wakes, shuddering and short of breath, she holds him. When she storms back to the room after yet another question about being his sidekick (Seriously? Raleigh laughs.), he sits beside her on the couch in silence as they both unwind until eventually she is curled up against his side as they watch an old film noir on TV. They don’t need to say anything. They are just there.
The press tour eventually winds down and people slip back into their lives. The problem is, Raleigh and Mako don’t really have lives to slip back into. They float, anchored only by each other.
Though she is highly sought after, Mako decides she is too bone-weary to fully throw herself into a job just yet. She consults, typing rapidly on a laptop from underneath a pile of blankets on their bed, pacing the suite and speaking in rapid Japanese over the phone. Watching her makes him smile.
When the re-formed United States comes to Raleigh and asks him to become an ambassador, he almost laughs in their faces. Surely they mean Mako. But no, for some reason they mean him. Just him. They want to send him around the world, making the States the leaders of the rebuilding effort with a hero at their helm.
At first, Raleigh doesn’t say anything to Mako. He isn’t interested in being a figurehead, but it feels like such an astonishing offer than not thinking about it would be a crime. Right? Isn’t having a purpose what he wants? The mere thought of it drains him. He knows Mako would tell him to take it. She wants the world to recognize his greatness, even if he would rather be asleep wrapped around her body.
They are still in a hotel, this time in Los Angeles, and when he opens the door he sees her stretched out in their bed, asleep in her clothes. His chest tightens as he watches her breath, each inhale earned through blood and bravery. The bed dips as he sits beside her, and her eyes slide open. A tiny smile quirks her mouth. Gently, he runs a hand over the curve of her back and she rises to meet him, her lips soft and exhausted on his.
The next day, he turns the offer down.
